AI Photo wins Sony World Photography Award - Artist Turns Down Prize.

German artist Boris Eldagsen has declined the creative open category award he won at the Sony World Photography Awards after revealing that his winning entry, titled Pseudomnesia: The Electrician, was actually created using artificial intelligence (AI). Eldagsen wanted to test the competition and raise a discussion about the future of photography. He acknowledged the judges for selecting his image but also questioned whether they knew that it was AI-generated.

The use of AI in photography, particularly in relation to deepfakes, has been a topic of much debate lately. The World Photography Organisation confirmed that during their discussions with Eldagsen, the artist had informed them that the photograph was a "co-creation" of his image using AI while also highlighting his photographic expertise. The awards have always aimed to celebrate the excellence and skill of photographers and artists working in the medium.

Eldagsen had expressed his desire to engage in an open dialogue about the issue and even suggested donating the prize to a photo festival in Ukraine. While Eldagsen declined his award, his entry has sparked a conversation about the future of photography and the potential role of AI in it.
